As part of his doctoral thesis, Mateusz Moderhak from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, Gdańsk University of Technology, is developing a modern method of diagnosing breast cancer using thermal methods. With this method, changes can be registered several years earlier than it is possible using standard tests.

 


Unusual water installations, a flying machine by Leonardo da Vinci's design, the projection of the night sky stars, laboratories in which visitors can conduct experiments – it is just a small part of the list of attractions the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw will propose its visitors. The first galleries will probably open in late September or early October.
Work continues on created in the Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science of Łódź University of Technology system for monitoring the progress of treatment of strokes on the basis of speech analysis, which was awarded the Grand Prix at the 58th International Trade Fair & Exhibition Brussels Innova 2009. The solution has a chance for implementation in Polish hospitals.
The temperature in Central Europe in the coming decades will grow faster than in most other parts of the world. In Poland in the twenty-first century the climate will be warming twice as fast as in the second half of the twentieth century - according to research of the project "Impact of climate change on environment, economy and society", conducted by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMiGW).



Harvard Minor Planet Center, gathering data on asteroids for the International Astronomical Union and NASA - confirmed the discovery of an asteroid by secondary school students from Sierpc. The new object is a so-called MBA, or main belt asteroid. Secondary school students found the asteroid on June 18, but had to wait two weeks for the final confirmation of their discovery. Dr Patrick Miller, Hardin-Simmons University in Texas employee and the program manager of the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) informed of their success. Newly discovered object received a designation 2010 MN2.

European Centre for Geological Education to be established in Chęciny

Field studies, courses for students and lessons in natural sciences will be held at the European Centre for Geological Education, which will be established in Chęciny. Agreement for the project implementation was signed at the University of Warsaw (UW) by representatives of UW, Świętokrzyskie voivodship, Kielce district and commune of Chęciny.

Prof. Andrzej Gorak from the Technical University received the medal "Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande" - equivalent to the Polish Cross of Cavaliers. The medal for contribution to the Polish-German cooperation has been awarded to the Polish researcher by the president of the Federal Republic of Germany.
